Commemorating 100 years of the end of World War 1
Holmes Chapel U3A History Group organised an Exhibition commemorating the end of the Great War one hundred years ago in November 1918. The 3-day exhibition focused on how the village responded to the National emergency during 1914 to 1918 and the impact that had on the village and its people and also how the village celebrated the end of the war. The WI were proud to help out with refreshments on the Saturday, doing what it does best and that's bake cakes. The Exhibition was a great success and the Remembrance Service at St Luke's today, Sunday, was very well attended and very moving and after a very wet start finished with lovely sunshine. Thank you to all involved who made this a well run village affair.

Village Fair
On Sunday 8th July the village held it's Summer Fair, and wasn't the weather gorgeous - a bit too much for some as they had to cancel the Dog Show. We once again held our Bottle Tombola, and this year we added some soft toys for sale for the kiddies (big and small). Loads of stalls and activities and everyone seemed enjoyed themselves. Well done to our members who volunteered to man the stall during the day.

We were entertained by members of the Holmes Chapel Ukulele Group.

Nell Gwynne at Tutbury Castle
On Monday 21st May, 13 of our members joined two coachloads of WI members of Dane Valley Group, on a visit to Tutbury Castle. What a fantastic sunny day we chose, although it did get a little warm in the marquee for our cream scones. What a delight Leslie Smith is as she dons the costumes of the various ladies, on this occasion - Nell Gwynne.
She take the persona of various strong ladies in history and well worth it if you get the chance to catch her, either at Tutbury or other organisation or group events. Thanks Lesley and your staff for a very enjoyable afternoon.

Celebrating Holmes Chapel Show
This Show was held on Saturday 17th September at the Community Centre and showcased our village in fine style.
Twenty-five organisations pitched their gazebos around the field at the Community Centre showing our community all they had to offer. We were no exception. We held a 'Name the Doll' and 'Number of Sweets in a Jar' competitions. Linda Gammon and Valerie Quinn manned the stall and the doll was won by one of members, Jean Jepson. The Sweets were won by a grateful young boy.
200 exhibits filled the hall with entries ranging from chocolate owls baked by the brownies to displays of vegetables grown on our local allotments. There were a few entries from our members with success by Lesley Davies and Linda Gammon, which ranged from 1st prize to commended in various categories. There were plenty of classic cars on display with the ukulele band and the Hermitage school choir filling the café with music. A great success, well done to all the organisers.

We entered 'The Celebration Basket' category and chose a 50th Wedding Anniversary as our theme. There were 6 members involved in the sub-committee and produced some fabulous contents. This is our first entry and we came 3rd! Well done ladies for all your hard work. Included in our basket were:
Parchment Crafted Flowers / Crocheted Bookmark / Knitted Bride and Groom / Cross Stitch Picture
Handmade Greetings Card / Painted Fabric Quilted Covered Photo Album / Flower Arrangement
Our member Linda Taylor decided to try her luck in the Photography categories. Unfortunately she wasn't placed in any of them but it was good experience. Perhaps more of our members will try their luck next time.
