Presidents Day
This year's Annual Council Meeting was a little bit different as they welcomed Presidents from throughout the Cheshire Federation for an opportunity to mingle and learn some hints and tips. The event was held at Hartford Golf Club on 26th March 2024 and the day also enabled the Trustees to show their appreciation to the Presidents for their hard work and commitment they show over their tenure. A lovely lunch made the day a great social event.
Our President, Sue Blantern, was in attendance and thoroughly enjoyed the day and meeting like minded ladies. Both Selina Prescott, Cheshire Federation Chair and Ann Beckett, Cheshire Honorary Treasurer had the opportunity to give their remarks and present the Trustee Report and Accounts for 2023. Trustees Wendy Morris, Ann Pye and Vivien Lee presented information on the WI Learning Hub, the MCS and hints and tips to support the Presidents role.

Snowdrop Walk
Saturday 17th February 2024, eight of our members enjoyed a lovely Snowdrop Walk at Rode Hall. The weather was very kind to us as it was mild and sunny. Once we arrived the first thing was to have a cuppa or morning coffee. We then set off and had a leisurely walk around the gardens down to the lake and through all the Camelia's and other Spring flowers. It was all beautiful and the fragrance from the Daphne Bholua was incredible.

November Meeting
Our President, Sue welcomed the room and invited the 28 members and visitor to sing Jerusalem. After the business of the evening we closed this meeting and opened our Annual Meeting. The presentation of the Financial Report/Statement and the appointment of the Independent Examiner was agreed and we then voted in our new Committee with Sue Blantern being returned as President for a second year. We then had the presentation of our Rose Bowl for our monthly competitions. This was won by Janet Jackson with joint second Valerie Quinn and Françoise Rothery, and joint third Andrea Petty and Sue Whitaker. Over 19 members took part in the competitions over the last year.
Once our meeting was over we enjoyed cheese and crackers provided by the Committee, and plenty of laughs with Stand-Up Bingo, followed by our festive raffle.

September Meeting
At our September meeting we had the lovely Eleanor who had returned from her trip to the world scout jamboree in Korea. We heard about the heat wave, sickness, and organisational difficulties in the press and Elenor was able to confirm that it was that bad, but declared she still had the trip of a lifetime. She told us all about her experiences and shared her memorabilia with the group.

August Meeting
At our August meeting we had to participate in a little 'Move It or Lose It' action presented by Claire Milnes from Everybody Leisure. The pictures show that this was a very jolly evening. Such concentration on Karen's face on photo 1, that ball wasn't going anywhere! What a group we make with all our hats and glasses on as well.

A trip out to Woodside Golf Club to have a go at Footgolf
Today, Saturday 29th July 2023 saw 8 brave members having a go at Footgolf. Not something we thought we would ever do but it was great fun, and no injuries. The weather looked OK and we only a little drizzle after which the sun shone the rest of the round. We were put into two teams and the overall winner was Sue W, who was very surprised to receive a medal and cup from the Club. After all that exertion, and laughter, a bacon butty and a cup of coffee was needed. I think another trip is on the cards.

Dane Valley Group Summer Event
The Dane Valley Group Summer event was held at Lower Withington Village Hall on Thursday 27th July at 1:30 pm. Ten of our members joined other WI's in the Group to be treated to a fantastic flower demonstration, and all of which were generously donated for the raffle. This was followed by a very tasty afternoon tea with a huge choice, very enjoyable. The afternoon finished with the raffle of the 8 displays and our very own Thelma Dutton was lucky enough to win one of them. Thank you to Josie and Pat for organising the event.

Village Fair
Sunday 9th July 2023 saw our annual Village Fair, which this year was part of the village's Summer Celebration weekend. We were lucky with the weather as it only starting to rain as the event was closed and we had all packed up. Our stall was very well received by children and adults alike and the whole event was a success which saw loads of families enjoying the afternoon, plenty of rides for the kids and over 50 stalls to wander around. They even managed to hold the Dog Show this year which was very popular with some lovely looking pooches being paraded around. Well done to all the organisers.

Remembering Deirdre
The 1st June 2023 was a dark day for our WI as we lost one of our well-respected members, Deirdre Thompson.
Deirdre joined us in 2004 and since then has been a big participant in all that we have done. She volunteered to help on stalls at Coffee Mornings, the WW1 Exhibition and Village Fairs. She joined us on various outings over the years and was a big part organising our sewing group in making a gorgeous double quilt which was raffled off for charity and made £400. Deirdre was also very active as a member of our bowling team and entered many competitions with a great deal of success. She had a go at darts but only because it included lunch, she readily admitted that she was a little short to reach treble 20. She enjoyed the Dane Valley Group organised Segway outing that we decided to do our own WI trip and had loads of laughs along the way. She also had a bash at our 10-pin bowling events, no competitions only fun. Deirdre’s funeral was held on Monday 19th June at Altrincham Crematorium followed by refreshments at the Crown in Goostrey. Quite a few of our members attended both so she had a lovely send off. We’ll miss your lovely smile and friendship Deirdre, sleep well. |

After disembarking there was a trail quiz that took them through the Roman Gardens and Chester, back to WI House where they were offered refreshments and a light lunch. They shared a table with a couple of ladies from Hough WI as well as Wendy, one of the trustees at Chester.
