Christmas Table Sensations
On Tuesday 15th November the Macclesfield WI Area Show Committee held an Event called Christmas Table Sensations at Henbury Village Hall. We had a cookery demonstration making Baked Brie with Sweet Chilli and Walnuts, which accompanied our Mulled Wine and Mince Pie. Dorothy Monks demonstrated table decorations which were donated to the raffle. On this occasion it was rare nobody from our WI won a prize, perhaps next time.

Darts Knock-Out
On Tuesday 15th November we played the 1st round match against Warmingham WI at the Market Tavern in Sandbach. We did manage to win one game but unfortunately overall were beaten 3-1. Thanks to Valerie and Anne for being our scorers and also to our hosts for a good match and the lovely sandwiches and chips for our lunch. Good luck in the next round.

Yarn Bombing and Tour of Britain
What a fantastic day today. Very proud of our village and all who helped to make this day such a big success, that goes for all the businesses with their freebies and all the volunteers who made it happen. Thanks to our ladies who donated their knitted and crocheted squares to Molly Mumbles to help Yarn Bomb the village, it looked amazing.

Trip Out to Hollingworth Lake
On Monday 25th July five of us travelled up the motorway to Hollingworth Lake, aka "t'Weighvers Seaport" in Littleborough near Rochdale. It was a lovely day, though a little windy, and we enjoyed a leisurely stroll around the Lake (2.5 miles) and enjoyed a fantastic 2 course lunch at the Marina Italian Restaurant on the Lake Bank, with a little vino. We returned home late afternoon, and as luck would have it - no delays on the motorway!

Dane Valley Spring Group Meeting
Thirteen of us joined other members of the Dane Valley Group of WIs on a beautiful sunny evening for the Group's Spring meeting at Goostrey Village Hall. Josie Sykes, President, welcomed everyone including the new Cheshire Federation Chairman, Jean Harding, along with Selina Prescott and Ann Daughtrey of the Board of Trustees; our WI Advisor Sally Dyke; and our visitors from Knutsford and Malbank WIs. We also played host to Alderley & Birtles and Macclesfield WIs who came to see what we’re all about.
We then sang Jerusalem accompanied by Roberts Bakery Band, our entertainment for the evening, and wasn’t that a spine tingling moment! Musical Director, Simon Stonehouse, introduced the band who is very busy at the moment and he said over the last 12 days they had seen each other on 11 of them, so a very close unit indeed. They were also off to Blackpool for the Spring Festival, they are in the 3rd tier which means they are in the top 80 bands in the country so a fantastic achievement as there are 1000s of them. We were treated to a varied programme which ranged from pop music (The Rolling Stones and Lionel Richie) to classical, with rousing marching tunes and musical numbers in between. There were various solo performances including Sara who performed The Salley Gardens (Flugel) and Richard on drums who appeared ‘to do his own thing’ in the middle of Ol’ Man River. Josie finished the evening with business matters announcing that the Rose Bowl for the competition (which was a musical instrument of any medium) was won by Lower Withington with Brereton runners up and Goostrey third. I did manage to chat with our new Chairman who said: “It is a pleasure, as new Federation County Chairman, to be here at the Dane Valley Group Meeting and as always a very entertaining evening. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. The first, in my new role, of many visits I’m sure”. We did have another special visitor for the evening. Her name was Pip and she is a guide dog in training, but only a few weeks old at the moment and if her behaviour was anything to go by she will cope admirably. The loud drums and symbols did not fluster her in the slightest.

Happy Birthday Your Majesty
One of our long standing members, Françoise Rothery, was chosen by Cheshire Federation to make a special birthday card for the Queen’s 90th birthday. This is what Françoise told us:
I thought the Queen might appreciate a pretty floral card for her 90th birthday so I chose a pink and purple colour scheme of English flowers - roses, daisies and lavender.
The roses and leaves were made from painted stiffened silk with embroidered daisies and leaves. The lavender was made of knotted stiffened embroidery thread and I painted a piece of white lace to finish off the circle.

County Quiz
One of this year's preliminary rounds for the CFWI County Quiz 2016 took place at Byley Village Hall last night. Fifteen teams of 4 entered and we all started off very well with most of us getting 10/10 for the first couple of rounds. It then got serious and the categories certainly sorted us out. The teams going through to the Final in Comberbach in April are Jodrell Side WI and Goostrey WI with 60 and 58 points respectively. We came 6th with 50 points, which wasn't too bad as we were guessing a lot towards the end. The 'Mountains' round certainly ended any hope we had of getting through. Fun evening though.

Darts Knockout
Unfortunately for us it was a knockout! We were drawn against Woodnoth cum Shavington WI who play at The Vine in Shavington. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and did manage to win one game! Thank goodness they didn't tell us they were the current Champions or we wouldn't have even won that. Good luck to them in the following rounds.

Dane Valley Group Fun Quiz
We entered three teams of three into the Dane Valley Fun Quiz held at Cranage Village Hall on the evening of Thursday 24th September. Two of our teams came 4th - from bottom! But our third team, only consisting of Valerie and Freda, came 3rd - from top. Well done ladies. Some of the categories were a bit weird, and of course we had one on the WI, which is to be expected in our 100th year. We also had a fun table quiz during our tea break, it was all to do with the old £-s-d. Nobody got them all right but we had a laugh.

Great British MenuDon't forget to watch Great British Menu every night on BBC2. This year's chefs must plate up perfection, as they fight it out for the chance to cook at a glorious banquet marking 100 years of the Women’s Institute at London's historic Drapers Hall. Cheshire Federation 95th Birthday and Centenary Fun Day
Linda, Thelma and Anne went off to Gawsworth Hall on Tuesday 7th July to participate in these celebrations. When they arrived the heavens opened so they decided to have their picnic in the car, nice and dry. After this the weather was good to them and it stayed warm and dry for the rest of the afternoon. Mr Richards, the owner of Gawsworth, introduced the afternoon entertainment. The Woodford Choir sang a few songs from Les Mis. They then had turns from some of the trustees. Very funny monologues and poems, most WI related. Following the raffle Kelsall WI entertained them by dressing in costumes from the last 100 years of inspiring women, including Margaret Thatcher, the Queen, Lady Denman, Edith Cavell, Delia Smith, Ellen McArthur. They then welcomed back the Choir and they continued with songs from some popular shows. They were excellent and apparently stepped in at the last moment, so well done to them.

Village Fair
Well, what can I say, the day started horribly and putting up our Gazebo was a challenge in the wind and drizzle, but we got there. After lunch the sun came out and the whole event was a huge success. We were even lucky enough to have a Dakota fly over the whole proceedings. Hard work but fun. Well done to The Vic Club and The Holmes Chapel Partnership for all their organisation.
